Southwestern College

The design parti will capture key features from the main campus (e.g., the decorative Mayan frieze, colorful Jacarandas, and a diverse landscape palette), as well as concepts relating to sustainable design, water conservation, xeriscape design, technology and bi-regionalism. In addition, the academic yard is reminiscent of eastern college campuses, in particular, Harvard Yard where a diverse collection of architectural styles are presented in the various buildings which define the outdoor space. Accordingly, the juxtaposition of different forms and spaces adds to the richness of campus life where functionality is expressed. This can be seen in the Great Façade of the two-story Library – Student Union building where the apertures (one triangular, the other anthropometric) capture views of the Yard, various buildings, surrounding mountains, as well as “permanently casting its shadow” on the plaza for eternity.
